a5c7b9f00b A nurse, a policeman, a young married couple, a salesman, and other survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing aggressive, flesh-eating zombies, take refuge in a mega Midwestern shopping mall.
On a day like any other in the middle of the summer a nurse named Ana just wants to spend some time with her husband, Luis. But something goes horribly wrong when Luis is bitten and Ana has to run to keep from dying. She wrecks her car and is saved by a cop named Kenneth. They run into a small group of survivors consisting of Michael a TV salesmen, Andre a common thug, and Luda who happens to be Andre's pregnant wife. But what happens when the dead find the mall and have a craving for possibly the only living people left in the world? All Hell breaks loose. A small group of survivors manages to get into the Mall with the others but some are bitten which starts a controversy. Should they be killed or not?
SPOILERS!

First off, I really liked this movie. It lacked the expected 10 or so minutes of extreme gore ("feastings") that is in evidence in all the Romero films, and I think it was better for it.

I did see a couple of inconsistencies and they always gnaw at me (no pun intended!). At the end, they leave the marina on the sailboat, you can see an island off in the distance. Anyone with a sense of geography for Lake Michigan and the Milwaukee area should know there are NO islands there (you'd have to travel some distance up the coast to find some, and they're certainly not visible from anywhere near there).

Lastly, the owner of a 28' sailboat myself, there were a couple things I thought weren't particularly realistic. First, the size of sailboat (I'm estimating 35'-40') should have a fuel tank of 30-35 gallons. Half a tank of diesel (sailboats burn fuel VERY slowly) would give a range of 100+ miles. Secondly, it is a SAILBOAT. Being out of fuel isn't the end of the line…. Also, boats that size have dingies.

Finally, I believe they were looking for an "unihabited" island. There are a few small population islands further north (Mackinaw Island comes to mind) that would be a better destination and would require some "work" (killing of zombies) to clear but would be a good long-term home….

Just my thoughts, but I welcome your thoughts/comments!
Greetings, zombie fans

***warning some spoilers (in all 3 sizes-small, medium & big) through out the text*** First, I am a DOWN-STRAIGHT DRUNK movieholic (lol) in general (being horror one of my beloved genres). I don't tend to become excite when a remake of a movie is in works (mostly from a classic movie), and certainly when it's a Hollywood remake (you have permission to fear the result).but.now and then, some remakes are quite good. In fact, some (like The Thing that's one of my favorite movies of all time!) warp pass the original. I am not saying that Dawn of 2004 is better than Dawn of 1978, because each movieit's own thing going on. Well, this review and tender love is about Dawn 2004, so I will focus more on it. But I have to admit that in some things, new Dawn surpasses the original (makeup, editing, action scenes, lightning, cameos, and more departments - of course that bigger budget and things that we can use in recent years heighten in it too). Perhaps you don't agree with me but the stories of both are strong for a zombie movie and in both the interactions are top notch (of course it's easy with the 78 version because it's only four characters) And don't having the same satires in new Dawn doesn't make it a bad movie, on the contrary. The story of the original is centered in only four characters and the running time is bigger, in this one the story have more survivors and the running time is smaller.but I thought that the characters in this one were well built (not all characters have deepness but some), and if you pay attention it's the tidbits of dialogue, face expressions, actions and choices of everyone and so on that deliver the profundity of each. I know that everyone has is opinions but another thing that always bothers me (specially in this kinds of movies is that many times people start saying that `characters are flat' or `only meat to be eaten' but that's not that linear: 1) it's a zombie movie and a survival movie at the same time and we don't expect to see people reciting Shakespeare or saying `oh, I need t tell the story of my life for viewers to see that I have so much deepness that I am a walking sized black hole of development'; 2) you have to imagine if you were in the same situation, so many of the dialogues and actions would be the same or similar in many areas and events happening (you would want to search for your brother, if you were in a shop you would want to try a bunch of clothes, have fun playing videogames, etc); 3) there aren't clichés in this movie because in real life cops, nurses, family man, pregnant lady, or even a circus clown could be among the survivors; 4) don't think that in an `end of the World' situation all the survivors will be heroes or good persons or even remain united, people change for good or worsein all real life circumstances (many times people say about a movie `why the goody soldier gone berserker and attacked the old lady?', couldn't that happen in real life too? - the movie effectively shows that a future family father can gone crazy and a apparently asshole dude can sacrifice himself to save lives or even a bad person can remain a bad person); 5) remember again, the running time on this one is smaller and if the movie was all character development that would turn out to be zombie drama starring zombie `Burt Reynolds' wanna-bethe father of four tiny zombies (you have to imagine that they talked and interacted more than we saw in the screen -what happens with every movie, ex: in LOTR you can't actually compute that all the times that Aragorn talked with Legolas were the ones that we saw them on screen); 6) did I forget to mentioned that's a zombie movie for crying out loud? (saying that doesn't mean that the movie itself don't have drama or comedy, and all that - in fact it possesses big doses of those too, and thank God for that). The speedy zombies: well, I already saw many zombie movies and practically in all of them the undead are clumsy and slow, in this one they are not and that's not either a bad thing.I though the zombies in this one were a lot more scarier and menacing than the ones in the original and others zombie movies (Zombie, Brain Dead, RE, Day, Nights, City of the Living Dead, Return, etc).hey, I can live with slow zombs and fast zombs, so what? The already tired comparison between the fasty zombs and fasty infected in 28 Days Later (both have terrifying freaky hombres) that many people insist: first, the infected are not zombs and because the ones in Dawn 2004 are similar to the ones in 28 Days doesn't mean that they ripped it off (it's not like this `for now on all the future movies that have wire-fu fights are rip offs of Matrix'). 28 Days Later is one of my favorite movies too and has more character development (again focused in few characters) than Dawn 2004 but Dawn is so much great in all (even the timing of character development's insertion is great) that I almost can put that in the same pedestal. About the actors & characters: first, Ving Rhames is one of my favorite actors (he has a strong presence in any movie, both physically and psychologically -someone already told, I too can see him peal potatoes for 2 hours and sill be mesmerized by him), and he's perfect in this movie (the character was made for him) and he shows a sure and calm presence throughout the movie (the coolness and badass presence emerges many times too). He's like a big sentimental guy in a cop uniform. The chemistry between him and Andy (a distant interaction because Kenneth is in the mall and Andy is in his own store, so the communication between them is restricted to binoculars and writing signs) is an odd but true friendship both sad and endearing.but even that doesn't stop Kenneth to shoot him when he turns zombie. I saw few movies with Sarah Polley (Dawn and Go) but I building a love for her.she is amazing (the look and the emotions are beautiful in her)the nurse of the band., Ana. Jake Weberstraight caring guy called Michael was profound and he carried many great dramatic moments. He was like the worried father of them all. Mekhi PhiferAndre, future family man, is very good too and his obsession to `built a family in a mad World' (doesn't bother him if his family develops a hunger of human flesh) shows that people change to worse sometimes. I wanted more screen time of him. Michael KellyCJ stunned me in a good way, I thought he was an all-out bastard but that was not exactly right. His line in the elevator (lol) is one of my favorite moments in movie history. All the others actors (secondary and such) were all also very good in their characters (even the ones that I didn't know much about, suchMonica, Norma, etc). The character that engulfs the others is the Cross Roads Mall (the name says everything because all the survivors came from different places and are differentindividuals). It can be cozy and/or threatening. There are many fantastic moments in this movie suchthe celebrity target practice, the birth scene (the baby could have been a little better), the truck escape, the visit in Andy's gun store, the chaotic opening and many many more. Almost ZERO negative things about this movie, but I felt that the movie could be much longer, more things to happen, and consequently more interaction and character development, action, suspense, horror, drama, and so forth. Action pieces (different environments and weapons); lightning (light & darkness, the prove that lanterns are very handy); music (all the soundtracks are amazing and fit the movie's tune, specially the Johnny Cash music); cinematography (great); art design & art direction (the dread trucks are a mean-deadly running machine and a fortress even against hordes of zombies); special effects & visual effects (great great); sound (great); costume (great); make-up (some freakishly zombies with bloody cream on top - excellent work people); gore (heads exploding, necks being munched, inclusion of pointy instruments in various body parts, shot wounds, chainsaw mayhem, etc, did I need to say more?) are thumbs UP. The cameos (alive and inorganic ones) are more than welcome: Ken Foreea priest says his famous line is superb, Tom Savinia tough cop is very funny, Scott ReinigerThe General is worth big time. The inorganic that I spotted are the cameo of Gayle Rossa cloth store's name and the helicopter from the original giving a little screen flight. In the movie, I was like one of them.among the survivors.feeling what they fell, sweatingthey run, enjoying life when I could, and fighting for my lifethey fight, and so on. The final is so bleak an unnervedthe original, even more so because we know the last survivors suffers one more zombie attack and we are left thinking if someone escaped or not (in the end of the original the two survivors fly to an unknown fate with little supplies but doesn't end with them being attacked). But one thing is sure, Chips the dog surely survived the zombies.and me being a big animal lover I was cheering for him too. So, did I like the movie? No, I loved it (I already seen it twice - and will definitely have it in DVD). I recommend for everyone to see it, even non-zombie fans or non-horror fans. Who knows, maybe the movie can bring more zombie adepts to our much-loved genre. As Moriarty (from AICN) says `it's a good time to be a zombie fan right now' and he's right, and this year is one great year for those `appreciators of human meat' (Dawn of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead, Resident Evil 2, and so on). Last year and future years are promising with Diamond Dead by George Romero being made, an Australian's Undead, remake of Day of the Dead and more. I sure hope that bid-budget and independent movie studios decide to make more zombie movies to delight us all. AndDr Logan in Day of the Dead and Barbara in Night of the Living Dead 90 say `They're us. We're them and they're us.'. As simplethat. Enjoy movies. CYA. =)
Faster, leaner and more compact than the original. Dumber, too, but that's almost always the case with remakes.
When her neighbors, wellher husband, are turned into murderous zombies, Milwaukee (Wisconsin) nurse Ana (Sarah Polley) takes refuge in a shopping mall where she and several other survivors, including policeman Kenneth (Ving Rhames), TV salesman Michael (Jake Weber), Andre (Mekhi Phifer) and his pregnant wife Luda (Inna Korobkina), mall security guards C.J. (Michael Kelly), Bart (Michael Barry), and Terry (Kevin Zegers),wella number of other survivors who make it to the mall, join together to fight off the zombies trying to get to them. Dawn of the Dead is a remake of the 1978 film Dawn of the Dead (1978), which was written and directed by American-Canadian filmmaker George A. Romero. Romero's screenplay was rewritten by American filmmaker James Gunn. Vivian (Hannah Lochner) wasn't her daughter. She was a neighbour. This is supported when Ana is getting home from work and Vivian is out rollerblading, and Ana says, "Say hi to your mom for me." It's likely that Ana left the front door unlocked and Vivian, now a zombie, wandered in. As for Ana's husband Luis (Louis Ferreira), Ana was very confused, frightened and most likely in a state of shock. At one moment, everything is fine; the next, her husband is dying; then he's trying to kill her. Her basic instinct of self-preservation kicked in. All that was on her mind was to get away. Once things had calmed down and they were secured in the mall, Ana had time to think and feel and finally broke down and started to cry about her husband. Simple. He was never bitten. The wound he sustained on his arm was from cutting it on a lighting fixture on the fountain while wrestling with a zombie. This confusion could stem from the difference between the writer of the screenplay, James Gunn, and whoever decided to suggest a reason for the zombies on the DVD case cover. Because the cover claims that it is a virus, some viewers were confusedto why an open wound did not expose Kenneth to the virus when grappling with the wounded zombie or why the water did not allow the virus to carry from the open wounds of the zombie and through Kenneth's open wound into his system. However, Gunn has denied the virus theory and has said that, when he wrote the screenplay, he envisioned it to be just the samea vampire bite…more supernatural or inexplicable in nature. "Virus" is just a general term for something that can be transmitted into the body and do harm. In John Carpenter's Vampires (1998), Montoya (Daniel Baldwin) says, "Doesn't matter what you call it…virus, kool-aid, whatever. It does the same thing…turns you into a vampire." So it could be considered a "supernatural virus" but the DVD cover just said "virus" so readers wouldn't associate it with ghosts, which is common with the term "supernatural". Because her wound was so minuscule. It was a small half inch cut on her forearm. The more severe the wound, the quicker they turn. For instance; when Ana's husband was bitten on the neck, Vivian was going for the artery. This would result in the victim rapidly bleeding out and quickly dying. This explains why Ana was telling herself, "I can't get it, I can't get it!", when she was trying to save him by pinching the artery and preventing any further blood loss. Anyway, a person doesn't turn into a zombie until they die. The virus gradually takes over living cells and replaces them with "undead" ones. When someone is bitten on the hand, arm, or leg, the virus is slower to take over the living cells until it does eventually kill them, at which point they reanimate. When they are bitten on the neck and bleed to death quickly or are killed in some other way (aside from being shot in the head), they will re-animate immediately after death. It is implied that Monica (Kim Poirier) was indeed a stripper and that she was also sleeping with Steve (Ty Burrell). Whether they were already seeing each other before the outbreak or they hooked up in the mall is left to the viewer to decide. The fortified bus makes it to the marina with hordes of zombies closing in from behind. As the group hurries down the dock to get onto the boat, C.J. remains behind to cover them. One by one, the zombies climb through the rear door of the bus and C.J. shoots them. He tries to get out through the door at the front of the bus but finds that it's jammed. "Figures," he says. He reloads his gun and fires a bullet into the propane tank, causing a huge explosion. The resulting fire keeps the zombies from following the rest of the group out on the dock. Ana, Nicole (Lindy Booth), Terry, Kenneth, and Chips the dog climb aboard the boat. Ana holds out her hand to help Michael aboard, but he shows her the bite on his arm and says that he's going to stay behind "and enjoy the sunrise." He kisses Ana's hand and gives the boat a shove out into the water. As the boat moves further out, he puts his gun under his chin and pulls the trigger while Ana watches sadly. Bloated Woman (Ermes Blarasin): Already far along in her infection when she arrives in the mall, she finally dies, re-animates and attacks Ana. Ana impales the woman through the eye with a fire poker.

Frank (Matt Frewer): Bitten on the hand before arriving at the mall, the survivors finally deduce that it's the bites that cause the infection. Kenneth (Ving Rhames) quarantines Frank and waits with him until he turns. Once he turns, Kenneth kills him.

Bart (Michael Barry): While attempting to turn on the generators in the parking garage, Bart is bitten in the neck by a legless zombie. The others start to run, but Bart falls behind and is swarmed by a group of zombies and presumably torn apart. He is never seena zombie.

Luda (Inna Korobkina): Bitten on the arm by Ben Cozine early in the film. Her husband eventually secludes her and ties her to a bed while she goes in to labour. Luda dies, re-animates, and delivers her infected child. Norma walks in, sees the zombified Luda, and shoots her in the head.

Andre (Mekhi Phifer): Derranged at the fact that his wife and newborn child are now zombies, he feels determined to keep his family together. Once Norma shoots Luda, he shoots Norma. Norma returns fire at him, and he dies from his wounds.

Norma (Jayne Eastwood): The rest of the survivors hear the gunshots and find Andre and Luda shot to death and Norma on her way to dying. With her last breath she says "The son of a bitch shot me!" then dies.

Andy (Bruce Bohne): Starving in his gun shop across the street from the mall, the group decides to send the dog Chips over to him with some supplies. Andy lets Chips in through a small shutter in the door, but a few zombies try and get inwell and bite him on the leg. It's likely they got him in the artery because he dies very fast and re-animates. The group go over to rescue Nicole (Lindy Booth) (who went after the dog) and to get weapons. Kenneth puts Andy out of his misery by shooting him in the head with a shotgun.

Tucker (Boyd Banks): Covering the escape of the group that went to get the guns, Tucker falls down the man-hole cover and breaks his ankle. CJ (Michael Kelly) tries to drag him to safety but the zombies catch up and start biting Tucker. Tucker tells CJ to shoot him, and so CJ does.

Monica (Kim Poirier): While the survivors are fleeing in the fortified buses, Glen picks up a chainsaw to deal with a zombie on the side of the 2nd bus. Kenneth makes a hard left turn and Glen falls over while wielding the chainsaw and lands on Monica, cutting her in half from shoulder to abdomen.

Glen (R.D. Reid): The accidental killing of Monica led to some blood spraying over Kenneth and onto the windshield of the bus causing Kenneth to veer off the road and crash the bus. Glen was either impaled by his own chainsaw or broke his neck in the crash.

Steve (Ty Burrell): Tries to save himself by crawling out of the crashed bus. A zombie perched on top of the bus pounces on him before he can fire a shot. When the group from the first bus go to check on the crashed bus, Steve wanders up to them, now a zombie. Ana blows his head off without hesitationshe promised she would do earlier in the film.

C.J. (Michael Kelly): When the bus reaches the marina docks, everyone runs for the boat. While laying cover fire from the back of the bus, C.J. gets swarmed. He tries to exit through the entrance at the front of the bus but finds that it's jammed. So he says "Fuckin' figures." lights a flare and shoots a propane canister, taking himself and dozens of zombies with him.

Michael (Jake Weber): Reveals that he was bitten on the arm when the group was attacked. He casts off the boat but stays behind. As the boat moves out over the water, he pulls out his gun, puts it under his chin, and pulls the trigger.

Survivors: Kenneth, Ana, Terry, Nicole, and Chips (the dog) are the only members of the group to survive the mall and the trip to the marina. However, during the end credits scene, it is shown that they quickly run out of water and food, and the ship runs out of fuel. Later, some of the mechanics catch fire. When they finally reach an island, they discover that it, too, is overrun with zombies, and likely die soon after arriving (although that is not confirmed). No, although his name is metioned in the creditshaving helped with the screenplay, they are merely referring to himthe writer of the screenplay for the original Dawn of the Dead (1978) (1978). He did in fact watch the film after he was done filming Land of the Dead (2005) (2005). George A Romero's comment on the remake:

It was better than I expected. … The first 15, 20 minutes were terrific, but it sort of lost its reason for being. It was more of a video game. I'm not terrified of things running at me; it's like Space Invaders. There was nothing going on underneath.

He further criticises the running zombies in his next Dead film Diary of the Dead (2007) (2007) when character Jason claims that dead things don't run. George Romero's original rule for zombies is that once any person dies, be it from natural causes, suicide, murder, car accident, etc.,longthe brain is intact the person will come backa zombie. That left some mysterious supernatural reasoning for why zombies came to be in the first place, hence the tagline "when there's no more room in hell: the Dead will walk the earth." This line is repeated in this film but doesn't hold the same meaningit did in the original film. We can assume that the "Romero Rule" wasn't employed, seeinghow the zombies can run. Also this is supported by when Andre and Norma shoot each other, they both die from multiple gunshot wounds but neither were shot in the head and neither come back to life. The surviving characters specifically mention this fact after they find the bodies. Although Universal has not made an official announcement, the studio has asked Zack Snyder to direct a sequel to his film. Snyder announced that he has agreed to do it, but that James Gunn will not return to write the script. Snyder also stated that his sequel will not be a remake of Day of the Dead, which was the sequel to the original Dawn of the Dead. However, it is highly unlikely that the film will happen any time soon, because Snyder already has plenty of films lined up for the next two to three years. The song is "It's a Wonderful Life" by Sparklehorse. The remake of the cult horror film Dawn of the Dead was released on DVD in a longer version. This version shows, additionally to new plot-scenes, also several violence-scenes, which had to be cut for the theatrical release in the USA. There's a scene early into the movie where a topless woman was censored. While, e.g. in the German version of the Director's Cut you can see her naked breasts, the US version offers an additional pool of blood to cover her up.
